Also known as medical acupuncture, dry needling is an incredibly valuable tool for targeted muscle treatment alongside other physical therapy techniques. When performed by a skilled, highly-trained, fully-insured professional, dry needling can stimulate trigger points and relieve pain from a wide variety of musculoskeletal and chronic pain conditions.

What Happens During a Dry Needling Treatment Session?

After identifying problem areas during an extensive muscle testing process, your practitioner will use a thin, sterile needle to pierce the skin to activate or release painful, tense sections of knotted muscle. Similar to traditional acupuncture, this treatment is practically painless, with some people not feeling the needles at all.

The needles will stay in your skin for a short period of time while the tension is released from the muscle, before being removed and safely disposed of.

How Does Dry Needling Help?

Trigger points can cause significant pain and can inhibit your range of motion. By relieving these points of tension, dry needling can alleviate pain or tenderness in these areas and restore your normal physical function. Dry needling can also increase blood flow to an area to encourage healing of damaged muscles.

How is Dry Needling Different to Acupuncture

While traditional forms of acupuncture originate from ancient Eastern medicine techniques, the term 'dry needling' was developed by American physician Janet Travell in the 1980s to reflect Western views of muscular pain and physical therapy.

Acupuncture can be used to address pain and other conditions related to the body’s energy flow, whereas dry needling specifically targets areas of tissue that are experiencing pain or tightness.
